Gold strikes another record high, equity markets struggle with mounting virus fears

Image
LONDON: Gold rates chalked up another record peak on Tuesday before pulling lower as the dollar clawed back earlier losses, while equity markets struggled with mounting coronavirus fears, dealers said. With worrying new spikes in infections in Asia and Europe — on top of the already-high new US cases — forcing governments to impose strict COVID-19 containment measures, the global economic outlook remains clouded, putting the brakes on a months-long stocks rally. The virus uncertainty, combined with China-US tensions, has sent gold soaring nearly 30% this year — and, on Tuesday, it struck another record pinnacle at $1,981.27 per ounce in Asian trade. That smashed the previous day's peak but it later pared the advance to sit lower for the day. But observers say $2,000 could be broken as early as this week, with focus on the Federal Reserve's next policy meeting, which is tipped to see it unveil more easing measures to support the world's top economy. Two bears at the Islamabad zoo still haven’t been shifted to Balkasar Bear Sanctuary due to health concerns, the Islamabad High Court was informed on Wednesday. The sanctuary authorities said that the temperature at the sanctuary is not suitable for the two bears. A German vet is currently treating them. Justice Athar Minallah, while hearing a case on implementation of the court’s verdict on shifting all animals at the Marghazar zoo to suitable sanctuaries, asked why it shouldn’t be investigated why the bears were brought to Islamabad and on whose orders. “Why are you harming animals for the sake of recreation?” Read more: Kaavan being sent to Cambodia, govt tells court He was informed that former wildlife director Raja Jawad issued a tender and purchased them for the zoo. Government, opposition at loggerheads over amendments in NAB law (28 July 2020)

Image
The government and opposition parties are once again at loggerheads with each other over the amendments in the NAB law. The government has rejected the suggestions by the opposition parties, saying the proposed amendments could damage Pakistan internationally and in the Financial Action Task Force’s forum. “Anti-corruption is our core principle and our agenda,” Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said in the parliament on Tuesday. He said that if the proposed amendments by the opposition become a law then the law itself will become meaningless. The minister said that the amendments put forward by the opposition parties seem like an attempt to remove money laundering from the NAB law. The leaders of the opposition, however, think that the government doesn’t want to talk over the amendments in ‘good faith’. Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, the former prime minister and a PML-N leader, told reporters that the opposition parties can’t move forward with the government if th...

Archer needs support over racist abuse: West Indies captain Holder

Image
West Indies captain Jason Holder said Jofra Archer needed support after receiving racist abuse for breaching COVID-19 protocols as cricket could not afford to do without the talented England fast bowler. Archer was stood down from England’s series-levelling win in the second Test at Old Trafford, receiving a fine and a written warning, after it emerged he had breached the bio-secure regulations governing the series by making an unauthorised trip to his home in Hove. Barbados-born paceman Archer indicated in his Daily Mail column on Wednesday that, following online racist abuse, he may not be in the right frame of mind to play in the third and final Test with the West Indies, also in Manchester, starting on Friday. “For him (Archer) to have been racially abused in New Zealand last winter (a Kiwi fan was subsequently banned till 2022) and for it now to be resurfacing would traumatise any individual,” Holder wrote in his Daily Mail column published Thursday. “More than ev...
