Hyderabad: Six-year-old girl falls to death in open manhole

Image
A six-year-old girl passed away after she fell into an uncovered manhole in Hyderabad’s Paretabad on Sunday, according to the police. Bushra left her house to buy some snacks for herself from a nearby shop when she fell, her grandfather said. “We waited for help from the police and rescue officials but none arrived.” After waiting for over five hours the neighbours retrieved her from the gutter themselves. However, she couldn’t sustain the injuries and passed away on the way to the hospital. They said that the chairman of the union council lived in the same area but never took any action to cover the manholes on the street. “Even after the incident, the manhole was not closed,” a neighbour said. The holes were covered a day after the incident. “They have just kept a wooden plank on top of them, which does not reduce the danger manholes pose,” he added. Last month, two sanitary workers passed away while cleaning manholes in the same area. No permanent action, however, ha...

Will not change stance on 18th Amendment even if entire family is arrested: Bilawal

Image
ISLAMABAD: PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said on Monday that the National Accountability Bureau can arrest his entire family but it still won't deter him from changing the PPP's stance on democracy, the National Finance Commission and the 18th Amendment. The PPP chairman was addressing media outside an accountability court on Monday where former president Asif Ali Zardari had attended a hearing related to the Toshakhana reference.  Bilawal alleged that his lawyers were not allowed to go inside the court. “The public and lawyers were not allowed to come to the court. Is this an attempt to pressurise us or the judiciary,” he asked. “Are you so afraid of president Zardari?” said Bilawal, adding that the “entire police” of Islamabad was deployed at the court's premises. Bilawal said that the government can do whatever it wants but the PPP will not compromise on the 18th Amendment. “We are feeling that there is pressure on us, we are being threatened so that ...

Waqar backs Azhar Ali to overcome bad form in 2nd Test against England

Image
SOUTHAMPTON: Pakistan bowling coach Waqar Younis has backed skipper Azhar Ali to over overcome his current form, saying he was hopeful the 35-year old would deliver in the next two games against England. Pakistan, despite not having played international cricket for six months because of the coronavirus, dominated the majority of last week´s first Test at Old Trafford, with opening batsman Shan Masood hitting a Test-best 156 and leg-spinner Yasir Shah taking eight wickets. Their pace trio of Mohammad Abbas, Shaheen Afridi and teenage rising star Naseem Shah all troubled England´s top order. Pakistan, despite a second-innings collapse, were still favourites to win when they reduced England to 117-5 in pursuit of a target of 277. But a partnership of 139 between Chris Woakes (84 not out) and Jos Buttler (75) turned the tide as England won by three wickets to go 1-0 up with two to play. Azhar, criticised for his tactics during Buttler and Woakes' stand, has made just one ...
